Pickleball 101

A great game for any age

If you're familiar with Pickleball, you know how much fun it is. If you're not, here's a great way to join in!  A great game for all ages, pickleball is a combination of Tennis, Badminton and Ping Pong and was created with one thing in mind: fun. It is easy to learn and play whether you’re five, eighty-five, or somewhere in between.

With more than 3 million players in the world, and more discovering the game everyday,  the Saanich Peninsula Pickleball Association offers you a great way to get involved. Our Association has existed informally since 2014, and has been registered as a non profit organisation since 2018. We have 7 members on our board of directors and meet regularly throughout the year to discuss various issues including how to increase our playing venues and grow our membership.

Our low yearly membership fees make it inexpensive to play, and help provide funds for training and development, alongside fun social activities like our annual barbeque.

Please see below for membership fees and application.

Pickleball is...

  1. A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

  2. Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.

  3. Played with a paddle and a plastic ball, which has holes in it.

A game for everyone...

  • Pickleball facilities are located throughout Canada.

  • Many kids and teenagers play it in physical education classes in middle and high schools.

  • Seniors enjoy the social aspects and the ability to stay active in towns and retirement communities.

  • Tennis, racquetball and ping pong players love the competitive nature of the sport and regularly participate in competitive tournaments.

The court....

A pickleball court is the same size as a doubles badminton court and measures 20×44 feet. In pickleball, the same court is used for both singles and doubles play.

The net height is 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches in the middle. The court is striped similar to a tennis court with right and left service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net (referred to as the “kitchen”).

Courts can be constructed specifically for pickleball or they can be converted using existing tennis or badminton courts.
